A postcard for Boston

A few weeks ago in London, I saw a LEGO postcard for the iconic city, including miniature versions of each landmark. I thought it would be fun if I could do the same, but for Boston, since I probably have better knowledge of Boston than London.

I started with listing the most important landmarks, to me, and what order made most sense to display them. The initial list I came up with goes as follows

  • Boston Light
  • Logan International Airport
  • Prudential Center
  • Boston Common
  • TD Garden and Zakim Bridge
  • Joyce Cummings Center and President’s Lawn

Boston Light stood out to me as the most significant landmark, because of my adventure there this January. I wanted to make sure that I really sold the look of the lighthouse, because it is so memorable to me.

I started with the Prudential Tower, because it’s a building that is starkly present in the skyline from Tufts. I was unsure of how big to make the tower, so I made several revisions. Below is the first one, which proved to be too small.

After going through a few revisions, I settled on the final form that lives in the render above. I learned how by borrowing from the style of the real LEGO Postcards, like that of New York.

I had the most fun making the Zakim Bridge and Science Park Green Line stop. It’s one of my favorite views in Boston, since I remember going to the airport and passing by there after sprinting around Tufts campus in an attempt to say goodbye to my friends before winter break, and get dinner. I ate that dinner on the train as a sort of victory meal while getting a view of the Zakim Bridge.

I like doing projects like these, the quick turnaround makes me feel excited to learn more, in this case, the different LEGO techniques.
